Ski or Die

You could waste your time on a snowboard trying to put your bindings on while you have skiers flying past you, or you could just join the skiing club.

Before there was snowboarding there were skiers. They were the true pioneers of winter extreme sports. After all it is called a ski resort and not a snowboarding resort for a reason. Lets be honest skiers have just been perfecting their sport for a lot longer than snowboarders have.

One of the best reasons to be a skier is that fact that there is a lot less waiting involved. Once a skier gets off a lift they are ready to rocket down the mountain. On the other hand you have snowboarders that are always clogging up the front of the lift. The snowboarders have to sit there and make it impossible for anyone to get around them. Snowboarders tend to hang out in large immovable groups. If you ski this wont be you. If you ski you will be having fun the entire time that you are on the mountain.

Another reason that you should ski is the fact that you’re butt wont get wet. Many snowboards take so much time sitting on the slopes their pants end up getting soaked. Being wet on the mountain only makes you that much colder. Being cold can ruin your day. If you ski you will not have a care in the world. You will be able to stay dry and happy all day.

The third reason for being a skier is that you can get into Deer Valley and Alta resorts. There are some ski resorts that do not allow snowboarders. Unfortunately for snowboarders some of these resorts have the best snow on Earth. If you don’t want to miss out on the greatest snow you have ever had the opportunity to shred, then you should probably just learn how to sk

So Much Snow.

510 inches, that is the amount of snowfall that has already accumulated at Mammoth mountain in 2017. According to the weather channel Mammoth set record for snow fall this January at a total of 246 inches at their main lodge.

If you ski or snowboard it is a winter playground especially on the West Coast. Just in my home town we had a day that it snowed 8 inches. That may not sound like much but the last time Central Point Oregon got that much snow it was in 1911.

There is plenty of snow to go around this year. The West Coast has been setting records all over the place. This is the year to ski. If you don’t know how it’s time to learn.

According to curbed.com “Tahoe beat a 1973 record of 159 inches of snow that fell just in January. The Lake Tahoe snow-pack at 7,000 feet has received 80 percent of the seasonal average—and we’re only 43 percent of the way through the ski season. There’s even more snow at higher elevations.”

This means that the ski season will go late into this year. There is still plenty of time to get your skiing in this year and hit the slopes. The entire west coast has been experiencing plenty of snow.

This is also good new for California and the drought that they have been having. A good ski season is a good thing for everyone.

Now you are wondering where the resorts are on the West Coast that have the most snow and here is the list according to weather.com.

Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain, Mount Rose and Squaw Valley are among the locations that have seasonal snowfall totals that have topped the 200-inch benchmark through Jan. 9, according to data on each of the ski resort websites. One of those resorts, Mount Rose in the Lake Tahoe region, is reporting more than 300 inches of snow for the season.”

Are you a Jerry?

Are you a Jerry? If you answered no you probably are an avid skier or snowboard. If you don’t know what a Jerry is then I hope you never become one. If your name is actually Jerry, sorry for the confusion this article has nothing to do with you.

A Jerry in the skiing world is someone who, “exhibits a true lack of understanding for their sport, or for life in general.” –Jerry of the day. Jerry’s can also be defined as Gaper, Joey, or Gorb.

You will most likely find Jerry’s launching uncontrollably off of that brand new jump they just put in the terrain park. If you are un-lucky enough to be that Jerry, just make sure someone is filming you. Getting plenty of “footy for the boys” might just immortalize you in the Jerry hall of fame.

See, the Jerry’s that are lucky enough to be caught on film will most likely end up on the Instagram account called Jerry of the day. The people that end up here are prime examples of what you do not want to do at a ski resort.

Not becoming a Jerry is good for your health. 4 out of 5 Doctors recommend not being a Jerry. That 5th doctor, he is a Jerry. Don’t listen to him. Yes it’s true. When you borrow your uncles ski gear from the 80’s and decide to “huck it” off the edge of that cat track you might just end up in the hospital.

The sad truth is that everyone is at risk for being a Jerry. Even the best skiers in the world are not immune. If you find yourself questioning whether or not to hit that sick kicker ask yourself, “How likely am I to be the Jerry of the day?” and then hit that sucker, because if there is one thing that we all respect it is the send.

Shred the Gnar Pow Pow…

Unless you are a ski bum or know a ski bum you probably don’t hear the term gnar pow pow very often. According to the highly trusted urban dictionary the term gnar pow pow means really good fresh snow. A variation of saying, “gnarly powder.” For example “Let’s go shred the pow pow gnar gnar!”

2017 has already experienced record snowfall on the west coast. My home town of Central Point Oregon experienced more snow than it had seen since 1911. This is good news for the skiers of the world. Record snowfall means skiing heaven for those in search of the mighty pow.

So how do you find this glorious pow? Well this blog is your answer. It will have everything the average ski bum could want. Yes ski bums can use the Internet.  If there is pow pow to know about, you will hear about it first from this blog. If there is an epic ski story you can bet you’ll find it here. If there is good deal on that ski jacket you’ve wanted since last year the ski blog has got you covered.

Skiing is what keeps the winters alive. Without skiing what else is there to do in the winter? You could binge watch the Office for the third time this week, or you could get outside and live a little. We are just helping you live for the pow.

Contest Entry

This is the Photo that I chose to enter into the PF magazine spring photography contest. The reason I chose to enter this contest was because there is a cash prize. That would be kind of nice to win. I entered this image because I felt that it applied to spring. I also like how vibrant the colors are.

Here is a link to the contest site.  http://pfmagazine.com/photography-contests/

I submitted this picture for the contest 4.1.16

Photobook

This is a photo book that I created in Adobe Indesign. This is a compilation of all of the pictures that I have taken over the semester. This was a lot of fun putting together. You can see some of the best pictures I have taken for this class. I really like the Cover and the back page. I feel like it provides some contrast for the book.

Fine Art Print

I did a few things to this original image in order to make the colors pop a bit more. I adjusted the brightness and vibrance. I then sharpened the middle of the flower to make it more clear. I chose this image because I loved how vibrant the colors were. I also want to give it as a gift to my Mom. I took this shot in the computer lab and I used macro tubes to get a close shot.

Process: I used the screenshot function to take the pictures for the written tutorial. I then used quicktime to create a video tutorial of how to make a professional page in InDesign. I used pictures that I had taken previously like my screenshots and portrait picture. This is relevant because we will need to know how to make professional pages for future careers.
